Zoroastrian Fire Temple in Yazd World City
You can travel to Yazd over and over again. The city has so many splendid attractions that it never becomes repetitive. These very same attractions must have enchanted international experts enough to place it on the list of Unesco registered sites as Iran’s first world city.
One of the intangible attractions in Yazd is the peaceful coexistence of religions. Followers of different religions live peacefully with one another in this beautiful city. This is also evident in the various religious buildings around Yazd.
One of these is the Yazd Fire Temple which is very dear to the followers of the Zoroastrian faith. It is also one of the best attractions of the city.
The monument was built in 1934. The main building is located on a platform at the centre of the courtyard, measuring 21 meters from the ground. The Temple’s yard is always green. Stone columns and capitals adorn the front of the building and stones with floral designs cover the foot of the walls. These are all the works of artisans from Isfahan.
Once you enter the building, you will come across paintings of Zoroaster and sentences from the holy Avesta. As you walk further in, the holy fire is manifest in front of you. This burns in a large bronze vessel and is protected by a glass compartment. It is placed on a stand above the ground level. The holy fire is kept alight in a large space away from the sunshine. This space is surrounded by prayer and ceremonial rooms.
One person is in charge of keeping the fire alight in the temple. He is known as the “hirbod”. Over the course of the day, he adds a piece of dry, more resistant wood to the fire, such as apricot and almond hardwood. Visitors can see the fire inside its display case.
